Amity
Bite Me!

There’s honestly no reason that someone as young as 18 year old Amity Miller should be writing songs that bleed onto the record this powerfully. Yet here we are.

Amity has been building up an audience already on socials in advance of “Bite Me!”, his first single released a week and a half ago - and this track is one hell of a debut, heralding great things to come when the full debut EP arrives later this year.

The obvious comparison made here will be to Adele. And honestly, it’s not inappropriate, though being at the beginning of his journey, Amity’s writing and vocal delivery both have a rawer, more urgent flavor to them.

A lot of Amity’s potential is already realized here, a surprising amount, actually - but you get the sense there’s still a nice reserve of power, authority, and artistry to be developed, and that’s an incredibly exciting prospect.

There is a lot of clever writing here, and it’s all served beautifully by the conservative, piano-forward arrangement and Amity’s massive, insistent, powerful voice. When you’ve got these tools at your disposal, it doesn’t take a whole lot of dressing up to turn heads.

Amity
to be known

A plaintive piano leads us into this beautiful new offering from Amity Miller, before we hear “I am used to being loved oh so fiercely it leaves bruises to bloom on my skin”.

Thus begins a series of heartbreaking declarations of the sort. Extreme self-revelation is becoming something of a theme in Amity’s music. This sort of vulnerability and self-exposition tends to be something that artists have to spend years working up to.

In Amity’s case it seems to come naturally, but sit with the text a bit and you can see that it’s hard-won.

The song itself is compact, simple, delicate, and spectacularly executed. The chorus reflects the theme perfectly, feeling like we’re swinging back and forth between hope and trepidation, between acceptance and resistance, between fortified and vulnerable.     AGL

Amity
Hurricane Heart

“Hurricane Heart”, the new single from Amity arrives with a sparse piano line, before his powerful voice drives the song forward as drums, bass and electric guitar slowly trickle in creating a full but spacious band sound.

Masterfully arranged, the simple musical elements give each other space to breathe while Amity’s singing continues to drive the song forward. At multiple moments, the instruments trade off, providing instrumental spaces before Amity returns in force, his voice seeming to gain more and more power as the song proceeds.

This may be in part due to the fact that it was written live on stage at the end of a sound check, with audience members trickling into the room, and it really retains that raw live power.

Lyrically, Hurricane Heart explores the challenging subject of abuse and trauma, with lines such as the chorus’s intense “devastate my daydreams, desecrate my thoughts and douse me in gasoline, you took the life from my breath, crawling into my lungs, I would’ve been much better off without your love” delivered with passion and nerve.

Delving deep into the challenges of breaking free from an abusive cycle, Amity explores and unpacks just how difficult it can be to leave behind traumatic situations with eloquence.

As the vocal line crescendos and reaches a true melodic peak the band backs away and gives Amity space to shine before returning to close out the song in full. This third single from an upcoming EP is another stunning piece of art and augers great things to come from this young songsmith.     DCC
