Boston native David Clark Carroll exercises (or is it exorcises?) his musical predilections under the name Daring Coyotes, ostensibly a bluegrass-oriented project, though he does veer into broader territory on occasion.

The Aftermath EP is something you might call pre-apocalyptic symphonic bluegrass. Here he has piled strings upon strings upon strings and layered in some deep, dark, ominous vibes thrumming underneath it all.

The effect is mesmerizing, and most pronounced on the spectacular opening track “Elephant Amble”. We have previously likened it to trying to finish your picnic under the last remaining window of blue, as heavy black thunderclouds rapidly obscure the sky.

We wish we couldn’t say that you’ll have plenty of occasions this year when this record can be the soundtrack of your mind, but it seems like we’re in for a bit of a slog, emotionally.

Let’s at least hope whatever the aftermath of all this is, it’s as beautiful as The Aftermath.

Tales From Mount Tom is decidedly more traditional and classic than the previous offering from David Clark Carroll (Daring Coyotes).

Where The Aftermath featured something like doom-grass instrumentals with deeply ominous undertones slathered in layer upon layer of sparkling strings, here we get arrangements that should feel more familiar to fans of mountain music.

The album features deft performances from both Carroll and his collaborator Ryan Seiler (Broke String) on bass, and serves as something of a love letter to the roots of this sort of music, with a nod to the wry experimental tendancies of folks like John Hartford.

Taken as a whole, Tales From Mount Tom is a pretty big step forward in the Daring Coyotes catalog, a beautifully performed and produced, entirely cohesive, full-length collection that finds the project expressing confidence on all fronts.
