Lowing
M. Walker’s latest instrumental composition feels as monumental as a giant sloth striding across the vast plains of prehistoric Texas.
“Lowing” arrives with the sound of orchestral strings tuning, as a bouncing low pizzicato rhythmic riff slowly emerges. This is music for meditating on the rims of canyons, as birds circle on updrafts and the wind whistles through desiccated branches.
Halfway through, the swelling strings drop away like the sun disappearing in a narrow slot canyon, exchanged for a swelling solitary cello and discordant synth rhythms infused with an aura of old analog radio. It slowly peaks, like watching a dust storm sweep across the land and swallow the sky, before all else drops out but a low forlorn cello singing a few final phrases.
Lowing is a truly gorgeous piece of music from M. Walker, well worth repeated listens to discover more of the magic hidden within. DCC
