Voodoo Crush, a new project from Central Texas’s Brian Wenberg, is three singles deep on their first release. Sonically a bit of a throwback, Wenberg’s compositions nevertheless feel fresh and urgent.

There’s a great live feel to these performances, from the front-porch ballad “Part of Me” to the shuffle punk of “Rescue Me” and now “Allison” which made us immediately think of The Zombies.

This is probably the single where Wenberg’s voice finds its most effective lane. All of these tracks have an endearing, raw authenticity thanks to Wenberg’s straightforward, no-frills delivery. But here, this vocal approach reaches maximum effect. When he sings “you throw away the key” it sounds like an old familiar friend on the radio.

All in all, “Allison” is an excellent third single that leaves us with a nice variety of tracks and plenty of curiosity about what’s yet to come.
